Dominant Verstappen comfortably holds off Mercedes to seal victory in Abu Dhabi season finale
Yas Marina          [13 December 2020]

An imperious display from Max Verstappen saw him breeze to his second victory of 2020 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix season finale, leading home the Mercedes duo of Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton, who had no answer to the Red Bull’s pace around the Yas Marina Circuit.

With Mercedes having taken every pole and race win in Abu Dhabi since 2014, Verstappen reversed that trend with pole on Saturday, before converting it with a dominant performance under the floodlights, as he led home Bottas by 15 seconds, with Hamilton coming home just behind his team mate on his first race back since contracting Covid-19.

Verstappen’s team mate Alex Albon supported Red Bull’s cause by coming home P4, although having lacked the pace to really challenge the Mercedes in front of him.

Sergio Perez takes sensational maiden win in Sakhir GP as tyre issues ruin Russell's charge
Sakhir          [6 December 2020]

Sergio Perez’s F1 future may be uncertain – but whatever happens, the Mexican is now an F1 winner, after he benefitted from a nightmare Sakhir Grand Prix for Mercedes to claim his first ever Formula 1 victory, as Renault’s Esteban Ocon and Racing Point’s Lance Stroll completed the podium on a wild evening in Bahrain.

It had initially looked as though George Russell was set to pull off an incredible maiden victory on his first outing for Mercedes, having aced the start to lead pole-sitter Valtteri Bottas for the majority of the Grand Prix.

But Mercedes gave Russell the wrong tyres when he was pitted under a Safety Car on Lap 62 of 87, forcing another pit stop to correct the error – while Russell then suffered a puncture that left him P9 at the flag for what was at least his first ever F1 points finish.

Hamilton wins Bahrain GP, Grosjean survives huge crash and fire
Bahrain          [29 November 2020]

Lewis Hamilton claimed a routine win at the Bahrain Grand Prix, where Haas driver Romain Grosjean limped away from a huge crash which saw his car catch fire and split in two.

As he had at the previous two starts, Hamilton held the lead at the start and controlled the event from that point on. The Mercedes driver, who wrapped up his seventh world championship at the last race in Turkey, now has 95 F1 race victories.

Red Bull pair Max Verstappen and Alex Albon rounded out the podium places, but third on the grid was cruelly denied Racing Point's Sergio Perez, who suffered race-ending engine failure three laps from the finish.

The untouchable number 88 finished 3.1 seconds clear of second place Jack Miller (Pramac Racing), who helps Ducati to claim the Constructor crown, with the Australian getting the better of third place Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT) on the last lap as 2020 draws to a brilliant close.

Hamilton seals historic 7th title with peerless wet-weather victory in Turkey
Istanbul          [15 November 2020]

A stunning drive from Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton in the Turkish Grand Prix gave him his 10th victory of the season – and, more crucially, saw him claim the seventh drivers’ title of his career, to equal the record of Michael Schumacher, as Racing Point’s Sergio Perez and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel completed the podium after a thrilling race in Istanbul.

Hamilton had started the race in sixth, risen to third midway through the first lap and then dropped back to sixth by the end of Lap 1 after an error at Turn 9. But a decision to change his intermediate tyres just once saw Hamilton drive a masterful race to claim victory by over 25 seconds from Perez.

The win alone was enough to claim championship #7, but it was even more assured after a disastrous race for Valtteri Bottas - the only man who could have stopped Hamilton winning the title today - who spun six times en route to a P14 finish.

Morbidelli beats Miller as Mir becomes 2020 World Champion
Ricardo Tormo, 15 November 2020

In a thrilling Valencia encounter, the victory battle went to the wire as we witness the crowning of a new premier class World Champion.

After a seventh place finish at the Gran Premio Motul de la Comunitat Valenciana that saw Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT) beat Jack Miller (Pramac Racing) in a phenomenal last lap battle, Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) is 2020 MotoGP™ World Champion. History is made in MotoGP™ as Suzuki claim their first rider title since 2000, Pol Espargaro (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) completed the podium.

The eagerly anticipated Valencia GP got underway and as the lights went out, both Morbidelli and Miller got great launches off the line but it was the Australian who grabbed the holeshot. However, Miller was way wide into Turn 1 and that allowed Morbidelli to take the lead heading into the tight Turn 2 as Pol Espagraro propelled himself into P2.

2020 matches 2016 record as ninth winner emerges
Ricardo Tormo, 8 November 2020

Mir’s maiden MotoGP™ win couldn’t have come at a better time as 2020 witnesses yet another different winner.

We may have been forced to wait until the middle of July to see MotoGP™ bikes tearing around a racetrack competitively in 2020, but boy has it been worth the wait. Before Sunday at the Gran Premio de Europa, eight winners had emerged from 12 races. Now, Championship leader Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) has made it nine to equal 2016’s tremendous tally.

However, Mir’s Sunday performance at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo was nothing short of spectacular. A title-winning worthy performance as the premier class sophomore brushed the monkey off his back to win his first MotoGP™ race, extending his Championship lead to 37 points with just two races remaining. One hand on the trophy? You bet.

Hamilton beats Bottas and Ricciardo, after dramatic, late exit for Verstappen
Imola          [1 November 2020]

Lewis Hamilton spearheaded Mercedes claiming their record seventh consecutive constructors’ title at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, leading home team mate Valtteri Bottas and a delighted Daniel Ricciardo – but there was late race drama as Red Bull’s Max Verstappen retired from P2 after appearing to suffer a tyre issue, bringing out a Safety Car that led to a climactic race ending.

Bottas had enjoyed a strong start to the Imola race from pole position, leading into Turn 2 as Hamilton lost out to Verstappen on the run down to Tamburello on Lap 1 and moved to third.

But Mercedes’ decision to give Hamilton a long first stint paid dividends when Renault’s Esteban Ocon retired at the side of the track on Lap 29, the resultant Virtual Safety Car allowing Hamilton to pit from the lead – Bottas and Verstappen having boxed earlier in the race – and retain P1.

Hamilton takes record-breaking 92nd win with dominant drive in Portuguese GP
Autódromo          [25 October 2020]

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton has become the most successful driver in terms of victories in Formula 1 history, after a dominant display at the Portuguese Grand Prix saw him claim his 92nd victory from team mate Valtteri Bottas and the Red Bull of Max Verstappen.

Having started from pole position, Hamilton’s victory looked in serious doubt after a dramatic opening lap that saw him get passed by both Bottas and the McLaren of Carlos Sainz – Sainz then taking the lead from Bottas a lap later, as the Mercedes pair struggled to get their medium tyres fired up.

Once up to temperature, though, the Mercedes quickly re-passed Sainz, while Hamilton was then able to out-drag Bottas on Lap 20 of 66 to take a lead that he would only briefly relinquish in the pits, as he closed out a victory that moves him ahead of Michael Schumacher in the all-time wins list.

Morbidelli and Rins: underdogs to real contenders
Teruel, 25 October 2020

A 1-2 finish for the Yamaha and Suzuki stars means there are now just 32 points separating six riders with three races to go.

Coming into the Gran Premio Liqui Moly de Teruel and over the last couple of races, both Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT) and Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar) have been asked whether they are going to help their teammates try and win the 2020 MotoGP™ World Championship title race. The answer was yes, but only when they’re out of contention.

On Sunday at MotorLand Aragon, Morbidelli and Rins probably ensured that question isn’t going to be asked in Valencia as they brought themselves right into the Championship frame.

Hamilton beats Verstappen and Ricciardo in Germany to match Schumacher record
Nurburgring          [11 October 2020]

Mercedes’s Lewis Hamilton has matched the career win record of Michael Schumacher with his 91st F1 victory at the Eifel GP, triumphing over the Red Bull of Max Verstappen at the Nurburgring, as Daniel Ricciardo secured his first podium for the Renault squad.

Hamilton had been outmuscled by his polesitting team mate Valtteri Bottas at the start of the race, but passed the Finn on Lap 13 of 60 after Bottas locked up at Turn 1 – before a loss of power forced Bottas into retirement six laps later, Mercedes’s first DNF of 2020.

From there, Hamilton then had a relatively comfortable run to his record-equalling win #91, overcoming a Safety Car restart – coming after McLaren’s Lando Norris had retired on Lap 44 – to win from Verstappen by 4s, Hamilton’s victory poignantly coming in front of Schumacher’s son Mick, who was due to drive in Friday practice for Alfa Romeo this weekend, and on Schumacher’s home turf to boot.

Pol Espargaro (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) claimed the final podium spot as the title race takes another twist. Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT), Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) and Maverick Viñales (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) finished P9 and lower, with Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) picking up P4. Bottas eases to Sochi win over Verstappen as penalty leaves Hamilton P3
Sochi          [27 September 2020]

Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas scored his second win of 2020 at the Russian Grand Prix, benefitting from a penalty for his polesitting team mate Lewis Hamilton that left the six-time champion third at the flag, as Max Verstappen claimed Red Bull’s first ever podium at Sochi in P2.

Hamilton began the race on the back foot, after a pair of practice start infringements on his laps to the grid led to him being handed a 10s penalty mid-race, ruling him out of contention for the win, as he came home in P3.

Bottas, meanwhile, had passed Verstappen for second at the race start, before benefitting from Hamilton’s penalty to enjoy an untroubled run to the chequered flag for the ninth win of his career, at the venue where he scored his first back in 2017. It would have been an important confidence booster for Bottas, too, with the Finn’s previous victory having come at the season- opening Austrian Grand Prix back in July.

Mir has been a revelation this season and in Barcelona, the Spaniard produced another Sunday stormer to finish P2. It’s his third-straight podium, one that sees him become the first Suzuki rider since Kenny Roberts Jr in 2000 to take three rostrums on the bounce, and one that lifts Mir to second in the Championship standings – eight points away from Catalan GP race winner Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT).

Mir is the in-form man in MotoGP™ and yet again produces a podium after qualifying outside the front two rows, eventually missing out on the victory by less than a second.

Alpha Tauri's Pierre Gasly held off Carlos Sainz to claim an astonishing first Formula One victory at a wild Italian Grand Prix.

A stop-go penalty for Lewis Hamilton and a race stoppage blew what had looked like a routine race wide open. Gasly was the man who capitalised, just over 12 months since he was demoted from Red Bull back to its junior team due to a lack of good results.

Sainz, also searching for his maiden F1 victory, closed right up to Gasly on the final lap but was never close enough to make a move. He crossed the line just 0.4s behind Gasly's car. Racing Point's Lance Stroll took the third and final podium spot.

Hamilton cruises to Belgian GP win, Ferraris finish 13th and 14th
Spa-Francorchamps          [30 August 2020]

Lewis Hamilton took his 89th career win and his sixth victory of 2020 following a dominant performance at Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix.

Hamilton led from lights to flag, comfortably outperforming his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, who finished second. The victory saw Hamilton extend his championship lead over Max Verstappen to 48 points as the Red Bull driver finished third.

Although the result never looked in doubt, a big accident involving Antonio Giovinazzi and George Russell on lap 10 resulted in a Safety Car period. That prompted pit stops for the majority of the field and set up a long second stint to the flag. But as a number of drivers struggled to keep life in their tyres, Hamilton managed his race to perfection and crossed the line over eight seconds clear of Bottas.

A stunning victory for Oliveira who hands Portugal and Tech 3 their first premier class wins, in his 150th Grand Prix.

Before the start of the initial race, dark clouds were starting to creep over the Styrian mountains to raise the pulsating tension further. A flag-to-flag race was becoming an ever-increasing possibility, but weather forecasts were saying there shouldn’t be any heavy downpours for the race.

Hamilton and team mate Valtteri Bottas had been formation flying for 50 of the 52 laps at Silverstone until tyre drama struck. Second-placed man Bottas was the first to suffer as his tyre deflated on Lap 50, costing him second place, before on the very last lap, Hamilton suffered his own issue.

However, with Max Verstappen having opted to pit a few laps from the end to try and claim fastest lap, Hamilton had enough time in hand to just cross the line first, five seconds ahead of Verstappen and the third placed Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.
