Hamilton rounds off title-winning season with dominant Abu Dhabi win
Yas Marina          [1 December 2019]

As the curtain came down on the 2019 Formula 1 season, Lewis Hamilton enjoyed a silky smooth evening beneath the floodlights at Abu Dhabi to record his 11th win of the season, ahead of the Red Bull of Max Verstappen and the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.

Hamilton’s 50th pole-to-win of his career was arguably his most straight forward victory this season, as he comfortably eased away in the early part of the race before enjoying an untroubled run to the flag, to maintain Mercedes’ 100% win record at Yas Marina since 2014. It also meant that Hamilton tied his hero Ayrton Senna’s record for the 19th lights-to-flag victory of his career.

Verstappen had held out hopes of pressuring Hamilton off the start to challenge for victory, but ultimately had to settle for P2, ahead of Leclerc, who survived a post-race investigation into a fuel discrepancy.

Verstappen wins wild race in Brazil, as Ferraris clash and Gasly nets first podium
Interlagos          [17 November 2019]

Having come agonisingly close to winning at Interlagos last year before his coming together with Esteban Ocon, a brilliant performance from Max Verstappen saw him convert pole position into his third win of the 2019 season – while a mind-boggling final few laps saw both Ferraris sensationally clash and retire, and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton tip the other Red Bull of Alex Albon out of second, allowing Toro Rosso’s Pierre Gasly to finish a sensational P2...

Verstappen was a deserving winner in the race, having been the strongest driver across both Saturday and Sunday. But while he was taking top honours, it was the action behind in the final few laps that really caught the eye.

Following a late Safety Car brought out after a dramatic double retirement for Ferrari on Lap 66 of 71 – caused by Sebastian Vettel moving lightly over on team mate Charles Leclerc – Red Bull’s Alex Albon was looking good to take his first F1 podium. But with two laps to go when the race restarted, Hamilton tagged Albon, leaving the Thai driver to finish P14, while Gasly was able to hold off Hamilton in a drag race to the line to claim his own first podium in F1 – with the stewards later handing Hamilton a five-second penalty for his part in the Albon incident, which ultimately dropped him to P7.

Márquez wins to hand Repsol Honda the triple crown
Ricardo Tormo, 17 November 2019

2019 Champion claims victory number 12 of 2019 as Lorenzo scores points in his final race.

Repsol Honda Team are 2019 triple crown Champions after Marc Márquez claimed victory number 12 of the season at the Gran Premio Motul de la Comunitat Valenciana, with Jorge Lorenzo scoring points in his final MotoGP™ ride to help Honda win the Teams Championship. Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT) and Jack Miller (Pramac Racing) completed the final podium of the season.

Miller was third on the grid and he launched his Pramac Racing Ducati off the line like a rocket and managed to grab the holeshot into Turn 1, with Márquez getting a sluggish getaway from the middle of the front row to drop down to P6 having run slightly wide at Turn 1. Polesitter Quartararo then grabbed the lead from Miller as the Australian ran wide at Turn 2, with the Frenchman quickly creating a small gap to his rivals.

Bottas takes Austin win as Hamilton secures historic sixth F1 title
Austin          [3 November 2018]

Valtteri Bottas’ fourth win of the season at the United States Grand Prix wasn’t enough to deny his Mercedes team mate Lewis Hamilton from claiming a historic sixth world title, the Briton finishing the race in second, having fended off a late attack from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

Bottas had to win at the Circuit of The Americas to keep his slim championship hopes alive. And while the Finn drove a fantastic race from pole position to do just that, Hamilton made a one-stop strategy work to secure a third consecutive drivers' crown, and join Michael Schumacher as one of only two drivers to win as many as six F1 championship titles.

A late charge from Max Verstappen, meanwhile, wasn’t enough to put the Dutchman in with a shot of victory, as he secured his second straight podium in Austin, finishing just 0.854s off Hamilton.

Hamilton on verge of sixth title after supreme Mexican GP win
Mexico City          [27 October 2019]

Lewis Hamilton claimed a brilliant victory at the Mexican Grand Prix ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas to leave him on the cusp of a sixth world championship.

Hamilton initially doubted Mercedes' decision to pit him on lap 24, much earlier than those around him who had opted for a one-stop strategy, but it proved to be a race-winning decision.

The strategy required Hamilton to manage his tyres to the end, which he did in fine style, with a little help of some reassuring words from stand-in race engineer Marcus Dudley and team strategist James Vowles over the pit-to-car radio.

Márquez prevails against Viñales in Phillip Island thriller
Phillip Island, 27 October 2019

Unbelievable last lap drama unfolded as Crutchlow and home hero Miller claim podiums in Australia.

Marc Márquez (Repsol Honda Team) became the most successful premier class Honda rider thanks to a phenomenal victory at the Pramac Generac Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix. The Spaniard and compatriot Maverick Viñales (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) broke clear but last lap drama saw the Yamaha man crash, allowing Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda Castrol) to take P2 and home hero Jack Miller (Pramac Racing) to claim a stunning P3.

There were surprises and drama right from the off. From P4 on the grid, Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) got a great launch to get the holeshot into Doohan Corner, with Viñales slipping to P6 from pole. Then, at Turn 2, two heavyweights were out of the race. Danilo Petrucci (Ducati Team) was pushed slightly wide by Márquez as the packed shuffled into the left-hander. A little too eager on the gas, Petrucci then highsided as the Italian was launched into Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT). The Frenchman was wide and almost on the grass before Petrucci slammed into the side of him, thankfully both riders were thankfully ok.

The not-so-rookie, rookie. It’s been a dream debut year in MotoGP™ for flying Frenchman Fabio Quartararo on board his Petronas Yamaha SRT machine and at the Motul Grand Prix of Japan, the 20-year-old bagged 2019 Rookie of the Year with three races remaining.

It was yet another classy performance from Quartararo, who finished second to Marc Márquez (Repsol Honda Team) for the third time in four races. Despite the maiden win wait having to continue a little longer, Quartararo and his Petronas Yamaha SRT celebrated an astonishing season as the M1 rider propelled himself out of reach from Team Suzuki Ecstar’s Joan Mir.

Bottas jumped polesitter Vettel off the start to lead the German into Turn 1 at Suzuka, before going on to control the race at the front, managing a two-stop strategy to perfection to bring home the sixth victory of his career.

Behind, a titanic battle between Hamilton and Vettel for second place in the final laps of the race saw Vettel eventually hold off his rival, crossing the line just 0.4 seconds ahead.

Hamilton snatches Sochi win after Ferrari fail to make advantage count
Sochi          [29 September 2019]

Ferrari looked set to end Mercedes’ dominant run at the Sochi Autodrom, but in the space of a few seconds their hopes of victory vanished, with championship leader Lewis Hamilton seizing the advantage to seal a first Grand Prix win since the summer break….

Leclerc pitted first and set a flurry of fastest laps which proved enough to undercut Vettel and regain what would have been the net lead. But on his first lap out of the pits Vettel pulled over on track with an energy recovery problem, to his absolute dismay. There was worse to come for Ferrari, though, because that retirement triggered the Virtual Safety Car, neutralising the race.

This allowed Hamilton, whose Mercedes team had instructed him to extend his stint on the medium tyres, to get what essentially amounted to a free pit stop. The Briton boxed for soft tyres and rejoined comfortably ahead of Leclerc, with the other Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas pitting and rejoining third.

Sebastian Vettel has been on a rotten run, his last Grand Prix victory coming 392 days ago in Belgium. But the stars aligned under the lights of Singapore’s Marina Bay with the Ferrari driver taking advantage of a fortuitous strategy call to beat team mate and pole-sitter Charles Leclerc…

Vettel looked out of contention in third in the early stages as Leclerc led Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton and managed the pace at the head of the field, as all of the frontunners looked after their tyres to enable them to make a one-stop strategy work.

The other Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas was fifth, having been told to back off the pace to allow Hamilton to pit and rejoin ahead, with Red Bull’s Alexander Albon sixth and Lando Norris seventh in the McLaren.

It’s now Championship point to the Repsol Honda rider as two Ducatis battle a Yamaha for the final two podium spots.

On his 200th GP start, Marc Márquez (Repsol Honda Team) decimated his competitors to claim victory at the Gran Premio Michelin® de Aragon. The Spaniard led from start to finish as a fierce podium battle raged behind, with Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) and Jack Miller (Pramac Racing) completing the rostrum.

Three to go: Viñales was still holding onto P2. However, with just three laps remaining, the red Desmosedici was all over Viñales like a rash. Heading onto the back straight, the story was written – Dovi used the Ducati grunt to make Viñales look like he was standing still as 04 grabbed P2. Now, Miller smelt a podium. Into Turn 1 on the last lap, Miller went for it. Up the inside of Viñales, the Ducati man just about got it stopped and P3 was his.

Leclerc defeats Bottas to end Ferrari win-drought in Monza
Monza          [8 September 2019]

A battling performance from Charles Leclerc saw the Monegasque claim his second win in as many weekends, taking a brilliant Italian Grand Prix victory for Ferrari, the Scuderia’s first at Monza since 2010, as he saw off a late-race push from Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas.

Leclerc became a first-time Grand Prix winner last weekend in Belgium. But while that victory would undoubtedly have been special, winning at Monza in his first race here as a Ferrari driver – claiming the Scuderia’s first Italian Grand Prix win since Fernando Alonso’s victory nine years ago – will doubtless have turned the 21-year-old Leclerc into a national hero in Italy.

For the majority of the race, it appeared as though Lewis Hamilton would once again deny Ferrari home glory. But once the five-time champion’s tyres went off in the closing stages of the race, it was left to team mate Bottas to launch a late, and ultimately unsuccessful assault, on Leclerc.

Spa-Francorchamps          [1 September 2019]

Charles Leclerc claimed the first Formula 1 victory of his career and Ferrari’s first in the 2019 campaign in the Belgium Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, less than 24 hours after his friend Anthoine Hubert passed away after a crash in Saturday’s F2 feature race.

The Monegasque, who immediately dedicated his win to Hubert, who he grew up racing, was in a league of his own all weekend, topping two of the three practice sessions and all three segments of qualifying on his way to his third pole position.

Come race day, Leclerc led away from P1 and though he lost track position to team mate Sebastian Vettel during the pit stops, Ferrari instructed Vettel to move aside for the flying polesitter. From there Leclerc led reasonably comfortably, though he had to coolly hold off a late attack from Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton to clinch victory.

Hamilton brilliantly hunts down Verstappen to snatch Hungary victory
Hungaroring          [4 August 2019]

The Hungaroring has delivered some cracking races in its illustrious history but few were as thrilling as this year’s edition, as Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen had a race-long ding-dong battle for the lead, with Mercedes playing a strategy masterstroke and Hamilton doing his bit by brilliantly hunting down the Red Bull driver to clinch a sensational victory.

Hamilton has been the class of the field in this era of F1, while Verstappen has emerged as the driver to take his mantel. As Red Bull have closed the gap to Mercedes this year, the chances of the duo fighting wheel-to-wheel have increased and in Hungary we were treated to the kind of battle for the lead that we expect to see much more of in the future.

Verstappen led away from pole position, but Hamilton made things exciting by passing Valtteri Bottas at Turn 2 before setting off in pursuit of the Dutchman. Red Bull looked to have nailed the strategy when they pitted Verstappen six laps before Hamilton and ended up with a six-second lead, with both drivers running the hard tyres. But then things got exciting.

Hockenheim delivered an absolutely superb race in 2018 - but it was nothing compared to the absolute humdinger the iconic German track produced this weekend. And it was the large contingent of travelling Dutch fans that left the happiest as Max Verstappen mastered the rainy conditions to clinch victory on a day when many of the other big guns quite literally hit trouble...

But Verstappen's victory was just one storyline in what will be remembered as an all-time classic Grand Prix. Behind the Red Bull driver, Sebastian Vettel completed a sensational comeback from 20th on the grid to second, while Daniil Kvyat was a surprise third as Toro Rosso scored just their second ever podium. Runaway chanmpionship leaders Mercedes, meanwhile, suffered a nightmare in their 200th race, with Bottas crashing out and polesitter Lewis Hamilton having multiple offs on his way to P11.

And to think, Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner had his head in his hands at the start, as both Verstappen and team mate Pierre Gasly got handfuls of wheelspin to drop way down the pack. But that was just the first of series of twists and turns as the rain came, and then eased, and then returned, before the track finally started to dry out in the closing stages.

Silverstone          [14 July 2019]

Once again a huge crowd turned out for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone - and once again they were treated to a thriller. Pole-sitter Valtteri Bottas looked to have done everything right as he led from the front and fought off team mate Lewis Hamilton, but a Safety Car intervention gifted his Mercedes team mate a free pit stop, allowing him to leapfrog the Finn and ultimately a record sixth home win. But the lead battle was just part of the story...

Behind the Silver Arrows there was wheel-to-wheel action galore, as the Ferraris and Red Bulls engaged in a tense battle for third. It was eventually won by Charles Leclerc, but only after Max Verstappen had been dramatically punted out of the position by the other Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel...

Bottas led away from pole position and held off a spirited attack from Hamilton in the early laps, before the Briton wriggled through at Luffield – to the delight of a packed house at Silverstone. But Bottas wasn’t having any of it, tucking into the slipstream before catapulting his Mercedes up the inside at Copse to retake the lead in sensational fashion.

Lewis Hamilton secured a record-breaking seventh win at the 2019 Canadian Grand Prix, after a penalty for Sebastian Vettel, who finished first on the road, demoted the German to second in the standings.

A race-long battle between the pair came to a head on Lap 48 of 70 when race leader Vettel, under pressure from Hamilton, ran across the grass at the Turn 3-4 chicane, in the process squeezing Hamilton when he re-joined the track, for which the stewards later awarded a five-second race time penalty.

That meant Hamilton took a record-equalling seventh victory at the Canadian Grand Prix to match Michael Schumacher’s record in Montreal, as well as claiming his fifth win of the season to stretch his lead at the head of the drivers’ standings.

Miller launched from the front row for the first time since last year’s Japanese GP and made a good start, holding position before getting past second place Danilo Petrucci (Ducati Team) on his way to taking the lead of the race. But the GP19 rider couldn’t keep Márquez at bay for long as the reigning World Champion started to edge clear of Miller and Ducati Team’s Andrea Dovizioso.

Fast-starting Hamilton beats Bottas in Spain for fifth Mercedes one-two
Catalunya          [12 May 2019]

Having been well and truly outgunned in qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix by team mate Valtteri Bottas, Lewis Hamilton hit back in emphatic style on race day to claim his third win of the season, as Mercedes stretched their current record of consecutive one-two finishes to an incredible five.

After beating Bottas to the first corner, Hamilton then led the race throughout, to net his third Spanish Grand Prix win in a row.

The Mercedes duo were joined on an identical podium to 2018 by the Red Bull of Max Verstappen, with the Ferrari pair of Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc fourth and fifth, Verstappen maintaining his record of having finished ahead of at least one Ferrari at every race this season.

Márquez, Rins, Dovi, Rossi: nine points in it
Jerez, 5 May 2019

There’s been a Championship re-shuffle after the thrills of Jerez – but it remains nine points splitting the top four.

There may have been a changing of the Championship guard after Marc Márquez (Repsol Honda Team) emphatic win at the Gran Premio Red Bull de España, but the gap remains at just nine points between the top four.

Márquez’ 25-point haul under the southern Spanish sun on Sunday sees him take over at the summit from Andrea Dovizioso (Mission Winnow Ducati), who in turn couldn’t get the better of Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP’s Maverick Viñales in the battle for third.

Bottas wins in Baku to secure fourth straight Mercedes 1-2
Baku          [28 April 2019]

Valtteri Bottas extended Mercedes’ incredible opening to 2019, enjoying a lights-to-flag victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix as the Silver Arrows secured their fourth consecutive one-two of the season.

Sebastian Vettel completed the podium in Baku, Ferrari once again failing to de-stabilise Mercedes despite their apparent straight-line advantage. He was ahead of Max Verstappen, the Red Bull driver maintaining his record of finishing in the top four at every race this year.

Charles Leclerc was next up, meanwhile, the Monegasque recovering decently from his qualifying crash yesterday to take his third fifth place of the year – while a late stop to try and get the extra point for fastest lap paid dividends as he set a new lap record for the track.

3 races, 3 different winners, 1 colossal Championship.
Austin, 14 April 2019

Dovi, Marquez, Rins – Ducati, Honda, Suzuki. Nine points split the top four heading to Jerez as Texas springs a surprise.

The horsepower rodeo at the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas produced a stunner: the King of COTA Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) lost his crown, it was picked up by a first time premier class winner in the form of Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar), Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) secured a second consecutive P2, Pramac Racing’s Jack Miller earned his first Ducati podium and the Ducati of Andrea Dovizioso (Mission Winnow Ducati) leaves Texas as the title leader.

All this, combined with what we saw in Qatar and Argentina, has made the start to the 2019 season an absolute belter. We’ve seen three different winners on three different manufacturers: Dovizioso and Ducati in Qatar, Marquez and Honda in Argentina and Rins on board the Suzuki in America – the Hamamatsu factory’s first win since the 2016 British GP.

Hamilton beats Bottas in China as Mercedes dominate 1000th race
Shanghai          [15 April 2018]

As Formula 1 celebrated the 1000th World Championship race, Lewis Hamilton led home team mate Valtteri Bottas as Mercedes secured their third one-two in as many races to start the 2019 season. On a day when Ferrari had no answer for the Silver Arrows, Sebastian Vettel completed the podium in third.

Hamilton’s win means that Shanghai joins the Hungaroring and the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on the list of tracks where Hamilton has secured six victories.

Behind the Mercedes pair, Vettel’s podium position was effectively secured when Ferrari team orders saw Charles Leclerc moved over early in the race, with the Bahrain near-victor ending up a frustrating fifth, behind the Red Bull of Max Verstappen.

Marquez obliterates opposition in titanic Termas showing.
Termas, 31 March 2019

Reigning World Champion unstoppable in Argentina as Rossi beats Dovizioso to second on the last lap.

Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) obliterated the opposition on Sunday at the Gran Premio Motul de la República Argentina to take victory by over nine seconds, the reigning World Champion beating second place Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) and third place Andrea Dovizioso (Mission Winnow Ducati) as the Italian duo battled it out for the entire race.

That race for second was fierce though as Dovizioso, Rossi, Miller, Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda Castrol) and Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT) scrapped it out. But it was soon rostrum challenge over the Crutchlow as Race Direction gave him a ride through penalty for jumping the start – no repeat win or podium for last season’s Argentina GP victor.

Engine issues cost Leclerc, Ferrari Bahrain win.
BIC          [31 March 2019]

Ferrari suffered a nightmare at the Bahrain Grand Prix after an engine issue cost Charles Leclerc victory and Sebastian Vettel spun out of podium contention while fighting wheel-to-wheel with Lewis Hamilton.

Leclerc was leading the race when he lost power from the energy recovery system on his Ferrari power unit, which provides a 160bhp boost in electrical power to the rear wheels.

The loss of performance was dramatic, costing him roughly four seconds a lap, and by lap 48, Hamilton, who was running second, took the lead of the race. He dropped to third before a late Safety Car neutralised the order when both Renault cars retired with mechanical problems on lap 55.

Bottas beats Hamilton as Ferrari falters in Melbourne
Albert Park          [17 March 2019]

Valtteri Bottas has wasted little time in making amends for his winless 2018 campaign, taking an utterly dominant victory for Mercedes at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

Bottas narrowly missed out on pole position to teammate Lewis Hamilton on Saturday, but it took him less than 100 metres to put his car in front of the five-time world champion as the field raced down to Turn 1.

The Finn then led all but one lap at Albert Park -- even setting the fastest race lap to earn an extra world championship point under a newly-introduced rule for 2019-- before taking the chequered flag a massive 20.8 seconds ahead of Hamilton, with Max Verstappen finishing third for Red Bull.

Crutchlow: P3 for the comeback king in Qatar
Losail, 10 March 2019

After his serious injury sustained at the Australia GP and a largely effected preseason, the British rider produced a heroic ride at Losail.

Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda Castrol) produced an outstanding injury comeback ride at the VisitQatar Grand Prix to earn a heroic podium, finishing 0.320 off the win in third behind race winner Andrea Dovizioso (Mission Winnow Ducati) and runner-up Marc Márquez (Repsol Honda Team).

The Briton, who suffered a badly broken ankle and lower leg at Phillip Island, endured a tough winter being unable to walk. And having missed out on the first two preseason tests in Valencia and Jerez before the turn of the year, Crutchlow started 2019 on the back foot at the Sepang and Qatar Tests. However, a P6 in qualifying converted into a 17th career Grand Prix podium in Sunday’s race made Crutchlow the hero of the opening night in Qatar.
