Yas Marina          [27 November 2016]

Nico Rosberg clinched his first world championship with a gutsy drive to second behind Lewis Hamilton at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The German, who needed a podium finish to secure the title, weathered a tense opening two stints of the race and made a decisive overtake on Max Verstappen at mid-distance to consolidate second position. In the closing stages title rival Hamilton attempted to back his teammate into the chasing Sebastian Vettel and Verstappen, despite several instructions to speed up from the Mercedes pit wall. But it was to no avail as Rosberg held on finish just 0.4s behind Hamilton and secure the championship.

The 2016 title race will go down to the final round in Abu Dhabi after Lewis Hamilton won a chaotic Brazilian Grand Prix ahead of Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg, who scored the necessary points to continue his steady march towards his first world championship.

The wet race was stopped twice by red flags and featured five safety car periods as rain fell throughout the afternoon, testing the nerves of the drivers and, at times, the patience of the fans. But the tedious stops were outweighed by the thrilling restarts, with Max Verstappen providing the majority of the entertainment with a remarkable drive up and down the field to finally finish on the podium in third.

The ‘Spartan’ says goodbye to Yamaha with another incredible victory.

Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotogGP) started his 250th race at the Valencia GP, becoming the youngest rider to do so, and the day marked an era as well as ended one. In Yamaha blue since a first pole position in his first premier class race in 2008, the Mallorcan 5-time World Champion has taken three of those crowns in the premier class with the Japanese manufacturer: 2010, 2012 and 2015.
